One of the most significant adjustments to net metering involves a reduction in the benefits for new solar customers who install panels after January 1, 2025. Under the current system, solar customers receive credits on their entire electric bill. However, with the upcoming policy change, new customers will only receive credits on the supply portion of their electric bill. This shift could reduce the financial incentive for those considering solar energy in the near future, as their overall savings on utility bills will be smaller.
The good news is that due to the net metering credits being reduced to supply charges only, this opens up the ability for clients to apply for the ComEd “DG Rebate”, which for most all residential property owners in the ComEd utility territory is $300/kW. This equates to an additional $2,500-$3,000 on the average client's home, this is on top of the Illinois state solar rebate (SREC), our average client receives $7,500-$8,000 and the Federal 30% Tax Credit. With all three of these rebates, the NET costs of going solar are better than ever here in Illinois.
Grandfathering for Existing Solar Customers
The good news for those who already have solar panels installed—or plan to install them before the end of 2024—is that they will continue to receive full net metering benefits for the lifetime of their system, typically defined as 30 years. These customers will remain unaffected by the 2025 changes and will continue to enjoy credits across their entire electric bill.
